Otaku ME Gunpla Build Off V.2.0

Host country and venue:

  • Only entries by residents of the United Arab Emirates will be accepted
  • The final judging will take place at the sports auditorium at Emirates English Speaking School on November 3rd, 2017 (see map below)

Categories of competition:

  • Entrants must select one of the following categories to compete in:
  • Open Course Rising Star Clean Build
    Entries must be customized
    LED lighting is allowed
    Metal, plastic and other upgrade parts are allowed
    Entries can be free standing on or Bandai or customized action bases
    Scratch build entries are allowed
    Dioramas are allowed
    Diorama entries can use non-Bandai elements provided that the main highlight of the entry is based on a Bandai Gundam kit.
    • Open Course [High Level] Intended for seasoned experts with experience in global competitions or modelers willing to take on the ultimate challenge.
    • Rising Star [Intermediate Level] Intended for intermediate modelers who may or may not have competed in a competition.
    • Clean Build: [Low Level] Basic builds with a focus on perfection of execution rather than customization. This is a “no painting” category with allowance for minor detailing and out-of- the-box (OOTB) building. The intention is for any fan of Gunpla to participate regardless of skill level
  • Each category will also have a special People’s Choice award determined by winning the most votes from the public by way of Facebook likes on each entry on a dedicated section of the Otaku ME Facebook page
  • People’s Choice category winners are selected among the non-winning finalist entries in each category
  • Voting for People’s Choice entries will start on November 4 th , 2017 on the Otaku ME Facebook page and will conclude on November 9 th , 2017. Winners of the People’s Choice in all three categories will be announced on November 10 th , 2017 on the Otaku ME Facebook page.
  • Entries can be moved by Otaku ME to other categories with the consent of the entrant
  • Entries in the Clean Build category that are deemed too advanced for the category have to be moved to a higher category with the consent of the entrant or disqualified from competition


  • Only entrants aged 10 years of age or above by the time of final submission can enter the competition. Entrants aged 14 years and below must have a parent or guardian provide consent for participation
  • Only original Bandai kits can be used for the entry. The use of third party/knock offs, and/or resin conversions will result in automatic disqualification
  • Each entrant may submit a maximum of three (3) entries for the competition. In the event that 2 or more entries are submitted per entrant, only the entry with the highest point score will be considered
  • The entry must be built by the entrant. Descriptive proof may be required
  • The maximum dimensions per entry is 50cm x 50cm x 50cm
  • Unpainted or un-customized straight builds will only be accepted in the Clean Build category
  • The entrant must be willing to accept and comply with all the rules and notices mentioned
  • Entries must comply with the laws and regulations of the United Arab Emirates including but not limited to being free from derogatory, defamatory, culturally insensitive symbols and messaging
  • Failure to comply with competition rules may result in the entry being disqualified


  • The following leads to automatic disqualification:
    • Ideas and concepts that are directlycopied from other modelers
    • Entries which contain intellectual property rights by a third party such as branding and/or logos
    • Entries which contain personal information of any kind. (e.g. contact information, social media accounts, etc)
    • Entries which are slanderous or offensive that defame an individual or groups of people, ethnic, religious or otherwise
    • Entries contrary to morality and public order
    • Employees of Otaku ME are not allowed to participate in the competition


  • The following leads to automatic disqualification:
    • To enter the competition, completed entries have to be physically brought by the modeler to the judging event at Emirates English Speaking School between 12 noon and 2pm on Friday 3rd of November 2017 (see map below)
    • Entrants may be questioned about their entries during the judging event
    • Entries must not be winning works of any previous event/contest

Important Dates:

  • The date for submission, judging, and awarding will be on Friday 3rd of November 2017 at Emirates English Speaking School. All submissions of entries must be made between 12 noon and 2pm on Friday 3rd of November 2017. Late submissions will not be accepted under any condition
  • Winners and finalists from each category will be announced on the same day of submission and an awarding ceremony will follow the judging process
  • The announcement of winners is expected to be made around 6pm on Friday 3rd of November 2017
  • The People’s Choice winner will be announced on the 10th of November 2017 on the Otaku ME Facebook page


  • A point based system will be used for judging the Open Course and Rising Star categories on three criteria:
    1. Concept: 33 points

      The concept of the entry, the ideas and creativity
    2. Craftsmanship: 33 points

      How well the concept was executed and the overall quality of the work
    3. Painting: 33 points

      The quality and result of the painting.
  • Judging for the Clean Build category will not be point based. Winners will be selected based on the judge’s selection which will be influenced by:
    • Build finish [nub and seam removal]
    • Pose
    • Panel lining
    • Decals/stickers application
  • Judging is at the sole discretion of Otaku ME appointed adjudicator(s)
  • All judging decisions are final


  • All winners will be awarded a commemorative trophy in addition to the following prizes:
  • Coupons issued for prizes are in AED and are redeemable for online purchases at or for walk-in purchases at our store
  • People’s Choice winners are selected by highest number of online votes by the public via Facebook likes
  • In case of a tie for the People’s Choice category, Otaku ME will assign a tie breaking point to one of the entries with sole discretion
